I honestly have no idea where this saying came from - we've been saying it so long - but in our home it reminds us to think before we speak! We ask the kids (and ourselves!) "Is it kind, is it true and is it necessary?" If the answer is no then it's best to keep quiet - and it has saved many a hurt feeling or unnecessary argument.
